Formulations

Where cosmetic chemistry meets chemical engineering!

Measuring the ingredients for hand lotion

The Rheology & Formulations project series allows undergraduate students to get some hands-on lab experience making a variety of cosmetic products. Lotions, soaps, shampoos, and other products are developed over the course of 6 weeks, where students follow procedures and learn about the world of chemical engineering beyond what they make. Students will understand the chemistry behind their creations, the scientific method used for industry R&D, and the business world of commercial packaged goods. To conclude the project, students will develop a recipe of their own for a previously developed product, and present the final item to their peers, “selling” their product to the rest of the project group.
